Are you interested in learning more about publishing? The University Press of Kansas is looking for an enthusiastic, detail-oriented intern to assist with production-related tasks for the Fall 2023–Spring 2024 academic year. Internships are awarded on a competitive basis, and excellent oral and written communication skills and organizational abilities are essential.

This paid internship involves a minimum of 10 hours of work per week, with flexible hours. Intern will have the opportunity to learn about scholarly publishing and get hands-on experience in a relaxed but professional work environment. This internship is tied primarily to our Acquisitions and Production Departments, so the intern will learn more about how production editors coordinate the schedules of multiple projects; the stages of production from copyediting to page proofs to bound books; The Chicago Manual of Style; and e-books. Duties will include manuscript processing, including cleanup and coding of manuscript files; compiling pitch memos; review of queries and proposals; review and scanning of art; editing text; proofreading indexes; and e-book processing, including creating Web PDFs and quality assurance on e-book files.

UPK is searching for an intern with keen eyes and a firm grasp of good grammar, spelling, and punctuation; exceptional editing and proofreading skills are a must. Finalists will be required to take a proofreading test on-site. The successful candidate will also have a proficiency in the MS Office Suite and the ability to compose clear, concise correspondence. Knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite is a plus!
