University Press of Kansas Internship Program

Are you interested in learning more about publishing? The University Press of Kansas is looking for an enthusiastic, detail-oriented intern to assist with production-related tasks for the fall 2017 semester. Internships are awarded on a competitive basis, and excellent oral and written communication skills and organizational abilities are essential.

This unpaid internship involves up to 10 hours of work per week, with flexible hours. Internship may be eligible for course credit, as decided by intern’s academic department. Intern will have the opportunity to learn about scholarly publishing and get hands-on experience in a relaxed but professional work environment. This internship is tied primarily to our Production Department, so the intern will learn more about how production editors coordinate the schedules of multiple projects; the stages of production from copyediting to page proofs to bound books; The Chicago Manual of Style; and e-books. Duties will include digital archive maintenance, press-wide database data entry, file preparation and coding, proofreading, index editing, and EPUB quality control. UPK is searching for an intern with keen eyes and a firm grasp of good grammar, spelling, and punctuation; exceptional editing and proofreading skills are a must. Finalists will be required to take a proofreading test on-site. The successful candidate will also have a proficiency in the MS Office Suite and the ability to compose clear, concise correspondence. Knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite is a plus!
